The verb SER in the past tense.
In Spanish, the verb ser in the past tense, is conjugated in two main ways: the pretérito indefinido (also known as the preterite) and the pretérito imperfecto (the imperfect). Both are used in different contexts.
✅ Pretérito indefinido (Preterite)
This tense is used to express completed actions in the past, specific events, or situations that occurred at a particular point in time.
Conjugation:
- Yo fui (I was)
- Tú fuiste (You were) ……..Usted fue (You were, formal)
- Él / Ella fue (He / She was)
- Nosotros / Nosotras fuimos (We were)
- Vosotros / Vosotras fuisteis (You all were, Spain)…..Ustedes fueron (you all were, Latin America)
- Ellos / Ellas fueron (They all were)
Examples:
- La fiesta fue increíble. (The party was amazing.)
- Fui profesor durante cinco años. (I was a teacher for five years.)
🟡 Pretérito imperfecto (Imperfect)
This tense is used to describe habitual actions in the past, ongoing situations, or characteristics that didn’t have a clear beginning or end.
Conjugation:
- Yo era (I was)
- Tú eras (You were, informal)……Usted era (You were, formal)
- Él / Ella era (He/She was)
- Nosotros / Nosotras éramos (We were)
- Vosotros / Vosotras erais (You all were, Spain)………Ustedes eran (You all were, Latin America)
- Ellos / Ellas eran (They were)
Examples:
- Cuando era niño, me gustaba jugar al fútbol. (When I was a child, I liked to play soccer.)
- Éramos amigos desde la infancia. (We were friends since childhood.)

- Pretérito indefinido: used for completed actions or events that happened at a specific point in the past.
- Pretérito imperfecto: used for habitual actions, descriptions, or ongoing situations in the past.
