Note: This is a proposed syllabus for the topics that will be covered in the upcoming fall semester. The curriculum is subject to slight changes based on the specific goals of the students in class.
Beginner 1
- Introductions and greetings
- Cognates (words that sound like English)
- The alphabet and spelling your name
- Talking about yourself (name, address, phone number)
- Counting, colors, and shopping
- Asking for directions and telling time
Beginner 2
- More cognates (sound that sound like English but are not!)
- Talking about yourself (in more detail). i.e. personal description, hobbies.
- Expressing your likes using the verb gustar
- Using regular action words ending in -ar, -er, and -ir (i.e. hablar, beber, vivir)
- Understanding the differences between ser and estar
- Reviewing and mastering Beginner 1 concepts, and more
Low Intermediate — Grammar
- Tackling common pitfalls in Spanish, such as por vs. para and bien vs. bueno
- Learning how to construct sentences using adjectives and verbs
- Reading simple stories and writing journal entries to share with the class
- Exploring commonly used verbs (i.e. hay, tener, and haber
Low Intermediate — Conversation
- Expanding on the conversational skills acquired in the beginner classes
- Discussing real-life scenarios, such as communicating with a doctor during a hospital visit
- Navigating extended conversations while shopping and sightseeing
- Discussing everyday themes using simple, clear language that others can easily understand
