Direction & Perspective
Unlike English, where you can use “to bring”, Spanish uses two different action words based on your physical location.
- Llevar means To take / carry (moving away from the speaker) and
- Traer which means To bring (moving toward the speaker’s location).
Ejemplos
#1 —¿Puedes llevar estas manzanas al mercado hoy, por favor? – can you please bring these apples to the market today?
Sí, claro. Y de regreso, voy a traer pan fresco. – yes, off course, when i come back, i’ll bring fresh bread
¡No olvides llevar las bolsas! – don’t forget to bring bags!
#2 —-¿Puedes llevar este documento a la oficina antes de mediodía, por favor? (Can you bring please this document to the office before noon?)
Sí, claro. Y cuando regrese a casa, voy a traer el correo. (Yes, off course and when i return home, i’ll being the mail).
¡Perfecto! No olvides llevar tus llaves. (perfect, don’t forget your keys)
